Frequently asked.

What to expect for these sessions?

Each week you and your child will develop and practice skills in STEM through educational and fun hands-on activities. At every session a new STEM topic will be showcased in areas such as computer coding, engineering design, balance, gravity, magnetism, reactions, force, motion and so much more. Activities will be rich in questioning, designing, analysing and evaluating using STEM methods of measuring, calculating and comparing. All participants will have individual Lab Books which they will add in their achievements and outcomes from each session.

When are sessions at the STEM Lab?

Sessions will be held in the South Australian school terms commencing in 2020. Term 1 commences on Monday February 3rd 2020. From time to time, we may also run some pop-up session in the holidays too! Make sure you register your interest so that you do not miss out when bookings open for each Term.

Where are sessions held?

Sessions will be held at the Fullarton Park Community Centre, 411 Fullarton Road, Fullarton 5063.

Sessions also occur at Glenunga Hub, 70 Conyngham Street, Glenunga 5064.

Location depends on which class you are booked into.

How do I book?

Bookings are now open for 2020. Places are limited so book in early to avoid disappointment.

Can I give these sessions as a gift?

Absolutely! We have a gift certificate that you can purchase which can be redeemed for a 5 week block of consecutive classes, subject to availability. That way the recipient can schedule in the class time that suits them the best. What an enriching gift to give!

Why are sessions for 5 weeks?

We will aim to run 5 week blocks of sessions each term. Life is very busy and there are so many activities that kids are involved with. We feel running blocks for 5 weeks will give you and your child a good chance of fitting STEM into your schedule.

How large are the sessions?

We keep our sessions small with a maximum of 10 children (and their parent/carer). This allows us to have engaging and tailored experiences for each group.

Why do I need to come too?

These sessions are designed for a child and their parent/carer so that you can interact together on each activity. You know your child the best and you will love to see their achievements and growth as they investigate new ideas.

What do I need to bring?

Just yourselves. We will provide everything you need to take part in the activities.

My child is a STEM enthusiast. Will they be bored?

Fantastic, we would love to have him/her on board. For most activities we will be able to offer an extension challenge to continue the learning and engagement.

I don’t think my child likes STEM. What will they get out of it?

All of our activities are hands-on play based learning experiences. There are many STEM concepts which we will break down into fundamental learning concepts that a child may not realise are STEM ideas. Every child will be actively participating in developing their STEM mindsets.

I didn’t like STEM as a child. Will I cope?

Yes, you will be fine. We guide all of the activities that you will do with your child so you won’t be left on your own. We can give you pointers and help you with your STEM journey too. If you’re having fun, your child will too!

I have a younger child as well. Can they come too?

Our activities are designed for children aged 3-5 years and the materials and parts used in each session will be geared for this age group. Often these items are unsafe for younger children and we advise to arrange alternative care for the 45 minute duration of the class.

What about my child who is older than 5 years. Do they have a class?

Our current classes run during school times and most children aged 5 years and over are already busy. In the future, we may introduce classes for school aged children. Make sure to sign up to receive updates and be notified for any new session openings.

How do I learn more?

If you still have some questions, get into contact with us and we’d be happy to help.
